Reduce carbon - Food & Garden

There are numerous changes you can make to your daily life style (ie what you eat) that can have an immediate effect on the environment. Even small things like buying local produce helps reduce carbon and the footprint you leave on the planet every day of your life!

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so every time you make a coffee you are adding to global warming.

Here's a list of simple things you can do immediately, which will start to reduce your carbon contribution to global warming. Many items will cost you nothing and save you money:

FOOD

  • EAT FOOD PRODUCED LOCALLY IN SEASON AND UNPROCESSED.
Buy local fruit and vegetables, or even try growing your own. Don't buy fresh fruit and vegetables which are out of season - local produce requires less transportation.
Each food mile involves the emission of CO2. To avoid this contribution, support your area's agriculture: visit a farmer's market, look for regional produce and try to grow your own.
  • FOOD MILES
As well as your primary carbon footprint, there is also a secondary footprint that you cause through your buying habits ie out of season produce shipped in from far away and adding to your carbon footprint.
  • EAT FEWER ANIMAL PRODUCTS

  • Reduce your consumption of red meat. A vegetarian diet generates only half the carbon dioxide a diet of 30% meat, dairy and poultry produces - Animal flatulence, processing, packaging and transportation of products all generate excessive carbon dioxide.
Try replacing red meat with fish, eggs and poultry or eat meat-free meals every other day.
  • HABITS
Don't buy bottled water if your tap water is safe to drink
Do your weekly shopping in a single trip
    Reuse shopping and carrier bags
Don't buy products with lots of packaging.
    Buy organic produce

Electricity is one of the biggest producers of carbon emissions, so every time you make a coffee or turn on a light you are adding to global warming.

GARDEN

  • PLANT VEGETATION
Plant trees native to the region - trees are attractive, cheap, help with energy costs and reduce the CO2 in our air. They provide cooling shade and absorb CO2 from the atmosphere while creating oxygen.
    Use mechanical tools
Using non power tools ie a push mower not only saves fuel and reduces carbon dioxide but also gives you exercise.
    Recycle grey water.

VARIOUS

  • MORE CARBON FRIENDLY
Live closer to where you work and where your children go to school
See if your employer will allow you to work from home one day a week .
Use a bicycle rather than a car

THINK and be POSITIVE

Individuals can help reduce carbon emissions ? you can make a difference. Think about your spare time activities ? do they cause an increase in carbon emissions? e.g. Saunas, Health clubs, motor sport etc.

Reducing harmful carbon dioxide emissions is of great importance to everyone around the world, by reducing your carbon footprint you can reduce the threat of climate change. Help cut down the carbon you use by:

  • Reducing air travel
  • Minimising car use
  • Being energy efficient
  • Reduce unnecessary waste
